Reflection

By Daisy Roberts

In the mornings & afternoons,

when the fog rolls in & back out

again I drink tea.

The water makes a shore of me,

lulling me in its waves.

In the wetlands, the heron steeps

his stilt leg in the water, lily pads

stir the great teeming teapot

of a body being healed. Like me,

the water has seen no better day than this one

& does not wait to cast its devotion:

shows the sky how blue beautiful

it has become, collects in its arms

the great swoop herons

tracing slow, widening circles.

The tea tells greater stories

than some talk of thistle and leaf.

Listen, listen—The water will remind you

what has been made beautiful. Look,

look over the rim of the mug,

over the great grassy edge

of the shore—
