Fall Writing Series: Craft Talk with Fleda Brown

Traverse City based poet, Fleda Brown, will be discussing craft in this informal afternoon talk. 

About Fleda Brown

Fleda Brown was born in Columbia, Missouri, and grew up in Fayetteville, Arkansas. She earned her Ph.D. in English, with a specialty in American Literature, from the University of Arkansas, and joined the faculty of the University of Delaware in 1978. She founded the Poets in the Schools Program, and directed it for over 12 years. 

Her newest collection of poetry, The Woods are on Fire, was published by the Nebraska Press in 2017. Her other collections of poetry include: Fishing with Blood (1988), Do Not Peel the Birches (1993), The Devil's Child (1998), Breathing In, Breathing Out (2002), The Women Who Loved Elvis All Their Lives (2004), Reunion (2007), Loon Cry (2010), No Need of Sympathy (2013), and My Wobbly Bicycle: Meditations on Cancer and the Creative Life (2016). She recently co-authored a book of essays with Sydney Lea titled Growing Old in Poetry, which was released by the Green Writers Press in 2018. 

Brown served as poet laureate of Delaware from 2001-2007. She currently resides in Traverse City, Michigan, where she writes a monthly column on poetry for the Record-Eagle newspaper. She also has a monthly commentary on poetry on Interlochen Public Radio. She teaches in the Rainier Writing Workshop in Tacoma, WA, and spends summers with her husband, Jerry Beasley, in northern Michigan.
